ABSTRACT
Human–wildlife conflicts (HWC) are increasing and potentially harmful to both people wildlife. Understanding the current potential distribution of wildlife species involved in HWC, such as carnivores, is essential for implementing management conservation measures species. In this study, we assessed (forecast) Egyptian mongoose (Herpestes ichneumon) central part Iberian Peninsula. We acquired data concerning occurrences through an online questionnaire sent environmental rangers. used municipality level sampling unit because all municipalities within study area were covered at least by one ranger. Using information provided rangers (i.e. their municipalities), constructed favourability models assess (CDM) ecological (EM), respectively. >300 participated survey mongooses reported a total 181 921 studied. The CDM model showed mainly concentrated on western area, where intermediate–high values predominated. EM revealed wider distribution, including south–east which was also characterised values. Our predictions verified using independent data, confirmation reproduction rangers, reports other experts, field some areas. innovative approach based coupled with shown be useful methodology assessing cryptic but expanding species, while enabling estimations future steps expansion. proposed may help policy decision-makers seeking ensure example, designing awareness campaigns areas target expected arrive.
