ABSTRACT
The deformation kinetics of a multilayered composite made of brittle and ductile steel layers is studied based on the strain fields obtained from digital image correlation during tensile testing. At the length scale of the composite, a localization band propagates during tensile testing of a uniform section specimen. At the length scale of the single layer, observations proved that the martensitic phase can withstand non-localized tensile strains of more than 20% when integrated into the composite.
