ABSTRACT
Faced with increasingly prominent challenges in developing a knowledge-based economy, many countries have attached great importance to research and development (R&D) activities, particularly industrial enterprises. Considering the heterogeneity background across countries, this study examines R&D performance from 2016 2020 by comparing productivity of top enterprises world-leading economies industries. The metafrontier approach Malmquist index using data envelopment analysis inferential statistics are employed an empirical 1155 European Union (EU), United States (US), Japan, China operating six different results reveal that has improved over time, last year observed. Moreover, US was most productive, whereas exhibited worst levels. Finally, despite Consumer Goods & Services presenting best average performance, highest improvements observed more recently, especially Healthcare Pharmaceuticals ICT Services. suggest addition technology gaps, COVID-19 pandemic had important implications for findings can guide efficiency consequently facilitate evidence-based decision-making business sector policymaking at national level.
