ABSTRACT
The transition from mitosis to meiosis is a critical event in the reproductive development of all sexually reproducing species. However, mechanisms that regulate this process plants remain largely unknown. Here, we find rice (Oryza sativa L.) protein RETINOBLASTOMA RELATED 1 (RBR1) essential meiosis. Loss RBR1 function results hyper-proliferative sporogenous-cell-like cells (SCLs) anther locules during early stages development. These SCLs are unable initiate meiosis, eventually stagnating and degrading at late developmental form pollen-free anthers. suggest acts as gatekeeper entry into Furthermore, cytokinin content significantly increased rbr1 mutants, whereas expression type-B response factors, particularly LEPTO1, reduced. Given known close association cytokinins with cell proliferation, these findings imply germ may be attributed elevated concentrations disruptions pathway. Using genetic strategy, between hyper-proliferation disturbed signaling has been confirmed.
