ABSTRACT
Bastian, Jetten, and Ferris ( 2014 ) reported that shared pain enhances people’s bonding cooperative behavior, but no-pain has no such effect. They concluded is a type of social glue can improve cooperation. However, in real life, both painful painless experiences are often nonshared. Logically, the most direct way to determine whether sharing important element or not compare conditions with nonshared conditions. We conducted two experiments investigate relative effects on enhancing behavior by adding unshared no-pain. In experiment 1, we replicated Ferris’s findings, found effect was mediated empathy. 2, used 2 (pain/no-pain) × (shared/unshared) design while still induced more than no-pain, did induce Moreover, empathy significantly relationship between when participants experience. These results suggest necessary component for act as glue.
