ABSTRACT
Background. Despite more than 100 years of study, there remains no definitive diagnostic validation the functional psychoses. Factor analysis suggests presence three or psychopathological syndromes in psychoses as a whole. The relationship between these factors and cerebral anatomy has been investigated schizophrenia only. This study aimed to address symptom clinically important variables sample psychotic patients with spread diagnoses. Methods. In psychoses, data was obtained on four consecutive admissions using OPCRIT checklist. used generate operational diagnoses accordance pre-set criteria principle components performed data. loadings were compared each admission examine factor stability over time. scores at first also correlated clinical from patients' case notes. From 204 patients, 64 subjects recruited underwent an MRI scan brain. Regional anatomical volumes diagnosis admission. Results. A principal gave four-factor solution ‘manic’, ‘depressive’, ‘disorganization’ ‘reality distortion’ Factors showed high degree studied. significantly associated several variables. Three specific pattern anatomy. Conclusions. that may correspond relatively disease processes underlying illness. We propose use facilitate investigation mechanisms
