ABSTRACT
Ionic liquids (ILs) are a diverse class of solvents which can be selected for task-specific properties, making them attractive alternatives to traditional solvents. To tailor ILs specific biological applications, it is necessary understand the structure–property relationships and their interactions with cells. Here, selection carboxylate anion-based were investigated as cryoprotectants, compounds added cells before freezing mitigate lethal damage. The cytotoxicity, cell permeability, thermal behavior, cryoprotective efficacy assessed two model mammalian lines. We found that biophysical interactions, including permeability ILs, influenced by considering IL pair together, rather than single species acting independently. All tested had high but ethylammonium acetate demonstrated good both types tested. These results demonstrate despite toxicity, may suitable certain applications. It also demonstrates more research required contribution ion pairs knowing behavior ionic will not necessarily predict its part an IL.
