ABSTRACT
Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a malignant neuroendocrine tumor with high recurrence rate. Amyloid plaques formed from the misfolding of calcitonin are key characteristics MTC. Herein, we conducted first-in-human pilot clinical study by applying β-amyloid-specific radiotracer, [18F]AV-45, to positron emission tomography (PET)/computed (CT) imaging The presence amyloid in tissue sections five MTC patients was confirmed hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) Congo Red staining. [18F]AV-45 selectively accumulated continued similar distribution patterns H&E In addition, uptake can be largely blocked its nonradioactive reference compound. accumulation thyroid, neck lymph nodes, muscles healthy human subjects close background indicated PET/CT imaging. comparison recurrent patient, 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro-d-glucose ([18F]FDG) showed an elevated multiple nodes. contrast, only one these nodes had increased uptake. Postoperative histopathological analysis PET-positive node as deposition, while other [18F]FDG positive were free plaques. Thus, promise for
