ABSTRACT
A photocatalytic method has been developed for the efficient synthesis of functionalized benzimidazoles. This protocol involves condensation o-phenylenediamines with various aldehydes using Rose Bengal as photocatalyst. The was found to be general and successfully employed accessing pharmaceutically important benzimidazoles by aromatic, heteroaromatic aliphatic o-phenylenediamines, in good-to-excellent yields. Notably, effective less reactive heterocyclic o-phenylenediamines.
