ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to determine whether interleukin (IL)-8 is released within the upper respiratory tract infants during syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis and large number polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) present in these are contributing inflammation through release inflammatory mediators. Twenty-seven with acute were recruited one winter epidemic 20 infant control subjects from a cohort participating community-based vaccine study. Samples airways fluid obtained using nasal lavage. lavage spun remove cells, supernatant stored at -70 degrees C. supernatants subsequently assayed for presence IL-8, total human neutrophil elastase (HNE) activity. In children compared infants, elevated levels IL-8 (median (range) 1.53 (0-153) versus 0 (0-5.6) ng x mL(-1)) HNE (136 (32-694) 14 (0-516) activity (4 (1-220) 1 (0-339) mU found. These results indicate that interleukin-8 response infection suggest products playing an important role bronchiolitis. This contrasts predominantly eosinophilic evident atopic lower disease.
