ABSTRACT
Background: Hyperventilation during sevoflurane‐N 2 O‐O mask induction in adults is associated with a hyperdynamic circulatory response and epileptiform electroencephalogram (EEG). We tested the hypothesis that delaying onset of hyperventilation will prevent severe (periodic) EEG response. Methods: Thirty patients were randomized to receive either delayed (group D, n=15) or immediate I, sevoflurane (8% N O 50%) inhalation single‐breath method for unconsciousness. Fifteen allowed breathe spontaneously min after loss consciousness controlled (ETCO <4%) was started thereafter. In 15 immediately consciousness. recorded, mean arterial pressure (MAP) heart rate (HR) registered. Results: Epileptiform patterns seen 13 group I 9 D (n.s.). Periodic discharges (PED) tended occur more often ( P =0.07). Heart MAP higher than from 3 <0.05), both HR rose significantly baseline I. but not baseline. Conclusion: Regardless its timing, at high concentration produced PED Note ).
