ABSTRACT
Background: Sevoflurane inhalation induction of anaesthesia is widely used in paediatric anaesthesia. We have found that this method frequently associated with epileptiform electroencephalogram (EEG) adults, especially if controlled hyperventilation used. Methods: assessed EEG during sevoflurane 31 children, aged 2–12 yr. Anaesthesia was induced 8% O 2 N 1:2. The patients were randomized to undergo ventilation (CV group), or breathe spontaneously (SB group) for 5 min. recorded as noninvasive blood pressure and heart rate (HR). recordings classified by a clinical neurophysiologist. Results: Three different types interictal discharge detected. Suppression spikes (SSP) 25% 0% the CV SB groups, rhythmic polyspikes (PSR) 44% 20%, periodic discharges (PED) ( P <0.01), respectively. incidence all (SSP+PSR+PED) 88% 20% <0.001), Epileptiform increased anaesthetic induction. Conclusion: Both modes produced EEG. With ventilation, seen children. This warrants further studies suitability type general, children epilepsy.
