ABSTRACT
The role of the innate immune response in colorectal cancer is understudied. We examined survival patients relation to eosinophils, cells, infiltrating tumor. Tissue microarrays were constructed from paraffin-embedded tumor tissues collected between 1986 and 2002 441 post-menopausal women diagnosed with Iowa Women's Health Study. stained an eosinophil peroxidase antibody. Eosinophils epithelial stromal within (called hereafter) counted scored into three four categories, respectively. In addition, degree degranulation (across combined) was quantified similarly categorized. used Cox regression estimate hazard ratios 95% confidence interval for all-cause death during 5-year follow-up after diagnosis through 2011 ('total follow-up'). associated scores adjusted age diagnosis, SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results) stage, grade, body mass, smoking history. High score inversely correlated a decreased risk death: (95% intervals) 0.61 (0.36-1.02; P-trend=0.02) 0.48 (0.24-0.93; P-trend=0.01), respectively, highest vs lowest category. inverse associations also existed total score: 0.72 (0.48-1.08; P-trend=0.04) (0.34-1.12; P-trend=0.04), Further adjustment treatment, comorbidities, additional lifestyle factors, location, or molecular markers did not markedly change associations, while cytotoxic T cells slightly attenuated all associations. infiltration tumors especially tissue, may be important prognostic factor cancer.
