ABSTRACT
This perspective covers the use of molybdenum disulfide and related compounds, generally termed MoSx, as electro- or photoelectrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). State art solutions well most illustrative results from extensive photoelectrocatalytic literature are given. The research strategies currently employed in field outlined future challenges pointed out. We suggest that key to optimising HER activity MoS2 is divided into (1) increasing catalytic active site, (2) number sites catalyst, (3) improving electrical contact these sites. These postulations substantiated by examples existing some new results. To demonstrate electrocatalytic properties a highly conductive hybrid material, we present data multi-wall nanotubes on carbon (MWMoS2@MWCNTs). exemplifies typical collected electrochemical HER. In addition, it demonstrates origin closely amount edges layered MoS2. also discussed, based literature, with an emphasis MoSx either co-catalyst providing semiconductor, e.g. Mo3S+4on Si semiconductor intrinsic activity.
