ABSTRACT
Although burnout among nurses has been studied in a great deal, this work not included Korean nurses. Furthermore, the role of personal resources such as empathy and empowerment predicting variance never examined.The purpose study was to understand phenomenon A comprehensive model examined identify significant predictors individual characteristics, job stress resource, with intention providing basis for organizational interventions reduce levels experienced by nurses.A cross-sectional correlational design used. sample 178 from general hospitals southern Korea surveyed May 1999 March 2000. The data were collected using paper pencil self-rating questionnaires analysed descriptive statistics, Pearson correlations, hierarchical multiple regression.Korean reported higher than western countries Germany, Canada, United Kingdom States America. Nurses who stress, showed lower cognitive empowerment, worked night shifts at tertiary more likely experience burnout.Identifying is an essential step develop effective managerial strategies problem. Suggestions level include enhancing nurses' perceived power, clear descriptions expectations, exploring shift preferences, especially hospitals. In future research we recommend recruiting broader geographical areas random selection order increase generalizability findings.
