ABSTRACT
Abstract The three‐dimensional architecture of cells in the annulus fibrosus was studied by a systematic, histological examination using antibodies to cytoskeletal components, conjunction with confocal microscopy. Variations cell shape, arrangement cellular processes and were found both within between defined zones outer inner annulus. morphology three, novel is described: extended cordlike that form an interconnected network at periphery disc; extensive, sinuous region fibrosus; broad, branching specific interlamellar septae complex, yet seemingly deliberate various shapes their suggests multiple functional roles. Regional variations organization actin vimentin networks reported across all regions Most notable continuous, strand label disc's contrast its punctate appearance other regions. gap junction protein connexin 43 from annulus, including those which did not physical connections surrounding cells. These observations matrix healthy intervertebral disc should contribute better understanding site‐specific changes tissue architecture, biochemistry mechanical properties during degeneration, injury healing.
