ABSTRACT
Recently, with the increasing integration of wind power into power systems through power electronic converters, new types of subsynchronous resonance/oscillation (SSR/SSO) occurred frequently. The most striking feature is the participation of the converter control. It has been demonstrated that converter control had a decisive impact on the forming of oscillation at the wind farms in the Guyuan and Hami systems, China. Obviously, the mechanism and characteristics of these new phenomena are different from those of traditional SSR/SSO defined by IEEE. Theoretical research in this area is still at its initial stage. To promote the studies of these emerging SSR/SSO issues, it is necessary to improve the classification of SSR/SSO. In this paper, the evolution and existing classification of SSR/SSO are reviewed at first. Then, a new classification is proposed based on the dominant source of oscillatory modes and the way of interaction between generators and the grid. Next, several actual SSR/SSO incidents caused by the interactions between wind generators and the AC grid are discussed. Finally, the co‐existence of and interaction among different types of SSR/SSO are revealed.
