ABSTRACT
The conserved Hippo tumor suppressor pathway is a key signaling that controls organ size in Drosophila. To date signal transduction cascade from the Cadherin Fat at plasma membrane into nucleus has been discovered. However, how regulated by extracellular signals poorly understood. not only regulates growth but also planar cell polarity, for which it interacts with Dachsous (Ds) Cadherin, and Four-jointed (Fj), transmembrane kinase modulates interaction between Ds Fat. Fj are expressed gradients manipulation of their expression causes abnormal growth. regulate whether they act through known. Here, we report to control Interestingly, found Ds/Fj remarkable logic. Induction target genes proportional amount or presented cell, as would be expected if acted traditional ligands. Rather, up-regulated when neighboring cells express different amounts Fj. Consistent model differences levels pathway, artificial boundaries induce extra proliferation, whereas flattening endogenous results defects. system thus defines cell-to-cell mechanism thereby contributing size.
