ABSTRACT
The biosynthesis of the peptide antibiotic gramicidin S involves successive peptidyl transfer reactions between intermediates bound in thioester linkages to two active enzyme fractions, I and II. Fraction II activates recemizes phenylalanine, then initiates by catalyzing a reaction carboxyl group D-phenylalanine, an enzymic sulfhydryl group, free imino L-proline, one four L-amino acids all linked their functions separate groups on fraction I. Successive this type centers multienzyme complex lead formation thioester-bonded nascent chains and, ultimately, product.
