“Third Floor Respect”: A Black Masculinist Examination of Morehouse College’s Mathematics Learning Community

ABSTRACT
The disproportionate representation of Black men in mathematics has perplexed researchers for decades, and the undergraduate space been championed as a lever to help remedy this issue. Thus, more research is needed that examines men’s experiences majors. To advance knowledge field higher education, yearlong ethnographic study uses masculinity theory examine Morehouse College’s learning community, which comprised 16 graduating seniors. I use demographic surveys, semi-structured interviews, observations investigate these “Third floor respect” concept used denote mathematical prowess among male majors on third/top academic building. Third respect central finding ultimately described community’s peer interactions departmental attributes. Implications practice are shared asset-based empirical community scholarship, refute deficit narratives concerning abilities, broaden participation mathematics.
