ABSTRACT
Abstract This work studies the influence of radio frequency (RF) waves in ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) range frequencies on fusion alphas during recent JET D-T campaign. Fusion from reactions are created with energies about 3.5 MeV and therefore have significant Doppler shifts enabling synergistic interactions between them RF at a broad frequencies, including ones foreseen for future machines ITER (Schneider et al 2021 Nucl. 61 126058) SPARC (Creely 2020 J. Plasma Phys. 86 865860502). Resonant alphas, also called effects, will modify alpha distribution ultimately an impact orbit losses heating. Data 3.43 T/2.3 MA pulses based hybrid scenario (Hobirk 2023 ; Hobirk 29th IAEA FEC23 Conf. ( 16–21 October ); Challis 48th EPS Physics 27 June–1 July 2022 ) DTE2 campaign (Maggi )) were used analysis this study. The effects assessed. conclusions experimental data fast losses, i.e. measurements neutral particle analyser (NPA), scintillator detector, Faraday cups (FCs), TRANSP (Hawryluk 1980 Plasmas Close to Thermonuclear Conditions vol 1 (CEC) pp 19–46) simulations. Experimental indicates that there indeed changes function (DF) due interaction waves. NPA show increased 4 He flux few hundred keV up 800 power, while clearly shows modifications DF these energies. detector FCs compared without ICRH power versus cases enhanced MHD activity. trends diagnostics consistently no additional predictions ynergistic 42% increase electron 25% These however, become negligibly small, less than 1%, when is total auxiliary investigated pulses.
