PERCEIVED TYPES, CAUSES, AND CONSEQUENCES OF FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION: NARRATIVES FROM OLDER ADULTS

ABSTRACT
Abstract We investigate the perception of financial exploitation and its causes consequences by older adults who have firsthand experience being exploited. Thirty-one cognitively healthy adult participants aged 50 or were drawn from Finance, Cognition, Health in Elders Study. In-depth, one-on-one interviews conducted. Interview transcripts analyzed using an iterative, data-driven, thematic coding scheme emergent themes summarized. Categories included (a) investment fraud, (b) wage theft/money owed, (c) consumer (d) imposter schemes, (e) manipulation a trusted person. Themes emerged around perceived causes: element trust, promise security, lack awareness, decision-making, interpersonal dynamics. Perceived negative positive impacts finances, financial/consumer berhaviors, relationships emotional impact, future outlook. These narratives provide important insights into experiences.
