Development of a theory-guided pan-European computer-assisted safer sex intervention

ABSTRACT
HIV is a growing public health problem in Europe, with men-having-sex-with-men and migrants from endemic regions as the most affected key populations. More evidence on effective behavioral interventions to reduce sexual risk needed. This article describes systematic development of theory-guided computer-assisted safer sex intervention, aiming at supporting people living reduction. We applied Intervention Mapping (IM) protocol develop this counseling intervention framework European multicenter study. conducted needs assessment guided by information–motivation–behavioral (IMB) skills model, formulated change objectives selected theory-based methods practical strategies, i.e. interactive modules tools for provider-delivered counseling. Theoretical foundations were IMB social cognitive theory transtheoretical complemented dual process models affective decision making account specifics behavior. The approach delivering three individual sessions was tailored participants' contexts, adopting elements motivational interviewing cognitive-behavioral therapy. implemented evaluated using randomized controlled trial combined evaluation.
