German senior citizens’ capabilities for physical activity: a qualitative study

ABSTRACT
Sen's capability approach (CA) has found its way into health promotion over the last few years. The takes both individual factors as well social and environmental conditions account therefore appears to have great potential explore opportunities for ('capabilities') barriers active lifestyles. Thus, our objective in this study was investigate which capabilities senior citizens perceive available them order be physically active. In Southern Germany, we conducted 26 semi-standardized interviews with aged 66-97, 9 key persons who close contact their work life. We identified 11 interviewees considered important leading an lifestyle. They could grouped four domains: (1) resources, (2) interactions norms, (3) living (4) organizational environment. Results highlight need health-promoting interventions that widen range of on levels a individuals can freely choose they like. results make clear should not only target involve older adults themselves, but also families, nursing home staff or community representatives, because these groups are shaping adults'
