A retrospective cohort study. To compare the incidence of retrograde ejaculation (RE) after anterior lumbar spine surgery with disc replacement versus fusion use recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP).Anterior interbody (ALIF) has become a popular choice for treating number pathologies, largely because it preserves posterior paravertebral muscles and ligaments. Despite these advantages, approach is also associated various complications, one which RE. recent study questioned whether risk RE increased by BMP in ALIF procedures rather than alone. We conducted review all male patients who received using or artificial (ADR) on at least L5-S1 level between 2004 2011. Medical records were evaluated occurrence RE, contacted via phone to obtain current information. The was then compared 2 procedures.Of 95 cases including L5-S1, 54 underwent (56.8%) 41 treated ADR (43.2%). Postoperative occurred 4 (7.4%) (9.8%). not significantly different groups (P = 0.7226). At latest follow-up, 1 patient reported resolution RE.This found that similar rate BMP. overall retroperitoneal higher expected, underscores importance counseling about this specifically questioning symptoms postoperative visits.
