Multidisciplinary Team Training to Enhance Family Communication in the ICU*

ABSTRACT
Current guidelines from the U.S. Society for Critical Care Medicine state that training in "good communication skills...should become a standard component of medical education and ... available all ICU caregivers". We sought to train multidisciplinary teams caregivers communicating with families critically ill patients improve staff confidence families, as well family satisfaction their experiences ICU.Pre- postintervention design.Community hospital surgical ICUs.All admitted during two time periods.Ninety-eight five eight individuals trained standardized approach using Setup, Perception, Invitation, Knowledge, Emotions, Strategy (or Subsequent) (SPIKES) protocol followed by participation simulated conference.Staff members was measured immediately before 6-8 weeks after sessions validated tool. Family seven items measuring effectiveness Satisfaction (24) tool surveys received 121 trainings completed.Using 46 matched pre- postsurveys, increased significantly (p < 0.001) each 21 separate measures. showed significant 0.05 or better) improvement three individual compared those same pretraining.
