Outcomes of Penetrating Keratoplasty in Mentally Retarded Patients With Keratoconus

Mentally retarded patients with keratoconus who underwent penetrating keratoplasty (PK) were reviewed to determine long-term graft survival outcome.This longitudinal retrospective study included 20 mentally PK at the University Hospital of Alicante during years 1978-2007. Variables donor corneal study, type and level mental retardation, demographic data, age which was performed, preoperative ocular surgical technique, histopathologic complications, immunological rejection, mean suture permanency, endothelium final anatomic visual outcome.Thirty-nine keratoplasties performed on 28 eyes patients. Mean time surgery 29.6 (range 17-54 years). Follow-up ranged from 8 324 months, a 83.93 months. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis, cataract, posterior capsular opacification most frequent complications follow-up. Fifteen episodes rejection registered. At examination, 23 grafts remain clear 5 cloudy. Causes self-trauma, ulceration, rejection. Four developed ptisis bulbi.PK is safe procedure in mild moderately without compulsive patterns.
