ABSTRACT
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains a major cause of pediatric morbidity in Africa. In addition, HIV-exposed, but uninfected (HEU) infants can comprise substantial proportion all born high prevalence countries and may also be vulnerable group with special health problems.A total 14,110 were recruited within 96 hours birth between November 1996 January 2000. Rates causes sick clinic visits hospitalizations during infancy investigated according to infant HIV infection group: infected-intrauterine, infected-intrapartum, postnatally-infected, HEU, not-exposed (born HIV-negative mother).A 382 499 188 2849 9207 included the analysis. Compared infants, HIV-infected made 2.8 times more all-cause required 13.3 hospitalizations; they had 7.2 23.5 for lower respiratory tract after neonatal period 159.9 likely hospitalized malnutrition second half infancy. 1.2 common among HEU inversely associated maternal CD4 cell count, significantly higher except those whose mothers count ≥ 800 cells/μL, which was mean value women enrolled trial.Morbidity is extremely infants. increases severity disease, <800 cells/μL.
