ABSTRACT
The aortic root functional unit (ARFU) is a complex structure whose functions are strictly dependent on the biomechanical interaction among each of its anatomically defined elements. classical approach to in vitro study hydrodynamics does not take this complexity into account. We propose novel methodology based possibility house whole natural ARFU samples purposely designed pulsatile mock loop, allowing for surgery simulation. To point out usability and potentialities device, loop was tested with untreated porcine one prosthesized state-of-the-art bioprosthesis. sample holder design proved allow clinician treat easiness repeatability. valve leakage comparable literature data, Effective orifice areas were consistent constructor's data. In contrast, recorded pressure drops exceeded data from manufacturer quite aligned vivo postop echo-Doppler acquired implant recipients. This result suggests that our apparatus provide way investigate hydrodynamic phenomena resemble close those taking place final recipients' circulation.
