ABSTRACT
Abstract Objectives: To evaluate the necessity of canine fossa puncture (CFP) by comparing symptom scores and postoperative computed tomography (CT) findings between patients with severe maxillary sinus disease who underwent CFP those clearance through a middle meatal antrostomy (MMA). Study Design: A prospective, randomized study. Materials Methods: Fourteen met inclusion criteria for each MMA groups. In both groups, all diseased sinuses were addressed in same manner using surgical techniques; only difference was management sinus. Most completed Sinonasal Outcome Test 20 (SNOT‐20) visual analogue scales (VAS) six main symptoms preoperatively 3, 6, 12 months postoperatively. The Lund‐Mackay calculated from preoperative CT scan another taken mucosal thickening as percentage total volume also evaluated on scans, complications related to procedures investigated. Results: Twenty‐four follow‐up, questionnaires, scans included analysis: 11 13 patients. All had chronic rhinosinusitis nasal polyposis (NP). There no significantdifferences polyp extent or score pre‐ did not differ significantly groups scans. SNOT‐20 VAS improved after procedure However, there significant differences two except postnasal drip 3 postoperatively, which better group. Six group experienced one more procedure, although resolved spontaneously within months. group, three bleeding branches sphenopalatine artery during widening ostium, controlled intraoperatively suction cauterization. Conclusions: We could find any benefits over conventional method present Although is useful removing that cannot be reached MMA, it does guarantee subjective objective outcome have accompanying NP.
