Osteoarticular Manifestations as Initial Presentation of Acute Leukemias in Children and Adolescents in Bahia, Brazil

ABSTRACT
This study was to determine the prevalence and characteristics of osteoarticular manifestations on initial clinical presentation acute leukemias (ALs) childhood in state Bahia, Brazil.This retrospective assessed medical records 406 patients with AL from January 1995 December 2004.Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) diagnosed 313 (77.1%) myeloid (AML), 93 (22.9%) patients, including 241 males (59.4%) 165 females (40.6%). Age ranged 9 months 15 years (average: 6.18 y). The most common presenting features were fever (18.5%), musculoskeletal diffuse tenderness (15.0%), pallor (11.4%), leg (5.7%). Prior referral our center, frequent diagnosis anemia (15.8%), amygdalitis (3.7%), rheumatic (2.7%). Osteoarticular found 54.7% AL, a higher frequency among between 1 age (58.7%, P=0.0007). presence joint (16.2% ALLx5.4% AML), arthritis (26.6% ALLx9.7 bone (26.1% ALLx16.1% limb (49.5% ALLx25.8% antalgic gait (32.8% ALLx9.7% AML) had ALL. large joints, chiefly knees (10.6%), ankles (9.4%), elbows (4.4%), shoulders (3.6%) more often affected.AL should be considered differential symptoms unknown etiology children.
