ABSTRACT
Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes, many which are associated with HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART). We examined prevalence incidence MetS in ART-naive HIV-infected individuals starting ART. Methods: MetS, defined by the Adult Treatment Panel III criteria, was assessed at after ART initiation who enrolled selected AIDS Clinical Trials Group trials were followed long-term these as part Longitudinal Linked Randomized cohort. Cox proportional hazards models used to examine incident MetS. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) 95% confidence intervals (CI) reported. Results: At initiation, 20%. After 8.5 per 100 person-years. adjusting demographics body mass index, decreased CD4+ T-cell counts >50 cells cubic millimeter (aHR = 0.62, CI 0.43 0.90 CD4 >500), increased HIV-1 RNA >400 copies milliliter 1.55 (95% 1.25 1.92) use protease-inhibitor (PI)–based regimen [relative no PI use, aHR 1.04 1.51) any use]. Conclusions: In on ART, virologic suppression maintenance high may be potentially modifiable that can reduce The effect diabetes needs evaluated.
