ABSTRACT
We propose and demonstrate a GaN-based series-driven hybrid light emitting diode (SH-LED) device in which broad-area micro-LED components are interconnected for simultaneous illumination high-speed visible communication (VLC) applications. Through theoretical analysis based on an equivalent electrical circuit model characterization from fabricated exemplar with blue emission, it is shown that SH-LEDs combine the advantages of by offering high direct-current (DC) optical power output fast frequency response. The application this to VLC demonstrated through both point-to-point 9 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^\circ$</tex-math></inline-formula> divergence-angle coverage systems at 3 m transmission distance adopting DC-biased optical-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation scheme. Compared system using single micro-LED, our initial demonstrator SH-LED achieves same data rate 3.39 Gbps forward error correction (FEC) floor 3.8 notation="LaTeX">$\times\; 10^{-3}$</tex-math></inline-formula> , but received DC improved over times. For area system, up 1.56 rates FEC accomplished device, associated 4 times higher compared micro-LED.
