Managing, making sense of and finding meaning in advanced illness: a qualitative exploration of the coping and wellbeing experiences of patients with lung cancer

ABSTRACT
Coping plays an essential role in maintaining the wellbeing of patients with cancer. A number different coping responses and strategies have been identified literature. The value relevance meaning based theory has also emphasised, including Antonovosky's Sense Coherence (SoC) theory. Ten advanced lung cancer were interviewed up to three times. total twenty depth interviews carried out, fully transcribed data analysed following a methodology Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Three broad domains categorise core life concerns participants; making sense managing one's illness; daily relationships confronting future. Within these multiple themes are identified, which varying degrees help maintain patient quality life. This article considers SoC for understanding experiences cancer, identifies resources factors likely support coping, implications health social care services.
