ABSTRACT
Despite a rise in blood pressure, cerebral oxygenation decreases following phenylephrine administration, and we hypothesised that reduces by activating α1 receptors. We studied patients on cardiopulmonary bypass during constant flow. Phenylephrine raised mean arterial pressure (α1 -mediated) from (SD) 69 (8) mmHg to 79 mmHg; p = 0.001, vasopressin (V1 mediated) 83 (6) 0.001. Both drugs elicited comparable decrease 61 (7)% 60 (7)%; 0.023 (8)% 59 (8)%; 0.022, respectively. This implies after or declines as result of vasoconstriction, due either both V1 receptors being equipotentially activated an intrinsic myogenic mechanism vasculature reaction elevation.
