ABSTRACT
Previously, we observed strong positive associations between circulating concentrations of free testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in relation to Barrett's esophagus a US male military population. To replicate these findings, conducted second study sex steroid hormones the Factors Influencing Barrett/Adenocarcinoma Relationship (FINBAR) Study based Northern Ireland Ireland. We used mass spectrometry quantitate EDTA plasma nine ELISA hormone-binding globulin 177 cases 185 general population controls within FINBAR Study. Free testosterone, DHT, estradiol were estimated using standard formulas. Multivariable logistic regression odds ratios (OR) 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) exposures esophagus. While hormone not associated with all esophagus, did observe estrogens younger men (e.g. estrone + ORcontinuous per ½IQR = 2.92, 95%CI:1.08, 7.89), androgens higher waist-to-hip 2.71, 95%CI:1.06, 6.92). Stratification by body index, antireflux medications, geographic location materially affect results. This found evidence for ratios. Further studies are necessary elucidate whether consistently esophageal adenocarcinogenesis.
