ABSTRACT
ABSTRACT Background Medium cut‐off (MCO) dialyzers are designed to provide clearance of large–middle molecular weight uremic toxins and cytokines that also responsible for the pathogenesis sarcopenia. Aim To investigate short‐ long‐term effects MCO on fat muscle mass. Methods This single‐center prospective, cross‐over study includes 20 maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients treated with low‐flux (LF) dialyzers. Baseline parameters were measured under LF repeated at 2nd week 6th month after switching Fat tissues a skinfold caliper mid‐upper arm circumference. Muscle thickness strength ultrasound handgrip tests. Results Median showed statistically significant increase in second HD [15 mm (10, 17) 16 (13.3, 19.8), p = 0.04] remained similar ( 0.08). There was gradual median circumference [28 (27, 29.5), 28.5 cm 30), 30.6 (26.7, 32), respectively, 0.03]. Significant increases detected measurements all four abdominal groups 0.03 rectus abdominis external oblique; 0.002 internal oblique transversus abdominis) month. RF GCM thicknesses significantly increased 0.001 < 0.001, respectively). The oblique, abdominis, femoris muscles no differences We observed fibril length pennation 0.01 0.008, respectively) week, which test each time point without statistical significance. Conclusion mass, might be due their better compared serves as hypothesis‐generating investigation; larger randomized controlled trials required validate hypothesis.
