ABSTRACT
Abstract Purpose To evaluate the inflammation associated with use of standard silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane; PDMS) and heavy (HSO) Densiron‐68™ in patients undergoing vitrectomy for retinal detachment. Materials Methods A prospective study was performed involving 35 scheduled to undergo Patients received PDMS or HSO according superior inferior localization tears, respectively. For assessing inflammation, prostaglandin E2 (PGE 2 ) interleukin‐1 α (IL‐1 levels were evaluated aqueous. Results Thirty‐five eyes completed study: 20 HSO, 15 PDMS. The mean aqueous PGE level significantly higher than (869.16 ± 242.83 pg/ml versus 369.38 209.7 pg/ml, respectively; p < 0.0001). IL‐1 also (81.40 36.9 40.8 32.5 = 0.002). In a moderate positive correlation between endotamponade duration both ( r 0.44; 0.05) 0.48; 0.033) observed. PDMS, strong 0.89; 0.0001) 0.68; 0.006) Conclusion Although yielded favourable success rates surgical treatment complicated detachments, triggered more severe inflammatory reaction, time‐dependent manner.
