ABSTRACT
Summary Objective Previous studies have indicated that berberine is an effective insulin sensitizer with comparable activity to metformin ( Diabetes 2006, 55, 2256). Reduced sensitivity reportedly a factor adversely affecting the outcome of IVF in patients polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Human Reproduction 21, 1416). Our objective was evaluate clinical, metabolic and endocrine effects vs PCOS women scheduled for treatment explore potential benefits process. Design We performed prospective study 150 infertile undergoing treatment. Patients were randomized receive berberine, or placebo tablets 3 months before ovarian stimulation. Measurements The endocrine, parameters IVF. Results Compared placebo, greater reductions total testosterone, free androgen index, fasting glucose, HOMA‐IR, increases SHBG, observed groups. Three cycle increased pregnancy rate reduced incidence severe hyperstimulation syndrome. Furthermore, comparison metformin, associated decreases BMI, lipid FSH requirement, increase live birth fewer gastrointestinal adverse events. Conclusions Berberine treatments prior improved by normalizing women. has more pronounced therapeutic effect achieved births side than metformin.
