ABSTRACT
Abstract Background Formaldehyde is a common cause of contact allergy. Hidden formaldehyde, that is, formaldehyde in products without releasers, has previously been detected cosmetic products. Objectives The objective this study was to investigate the content and causes hidden leave‐on Methods release from 142 products, primarily creams, analysed using chromotropic acid (CA) method. included 130 with no releasers on ingredient list 12 releasers. Products positive CA, ≥2.5 ppm, were additionally high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). selected raw materials packaging also investigated. Results found 23 (18%) list. average 105 ppm (range: 0.5–507 ppm) 355 75–637 eight for HPLC analysis. Impurities dihydroxyacetone may be self‐tanners. No clear pattern other formaldehyde. Conclusions Changes regulation are needed prevent allergic dermatitis
