ABSTRACT
Radiologically assessed muscle mass has been suggested as a surrogate marker of functional status and frailty may predict patients at risk postoperative complications. We hypothesize that sarcopenia negatively impacts on recovery is predictive complications. One hundred undergoing elective resection for colorectal carcinoma were included in this study. Lean was estimated by measuring the cross-sectional area psoas level third lumbar vertebra identified preoperative CT scan, normalizing patient height. Perioperative morbidity scored according to Clavien-Dindo classification. All statistical data analyses carried out using Statistical Package Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20.0.Fifteen per cent sarcopenic. There no deaths study group. Sarcopenia associated with significantly increased developing major complications (Grade 3 or greater, OR = 5.41, 95% CI: 1.45-20.15, P 0.01). did not length stay, critical care dependency time mobilization.Sarcopenia, frailty, an important factor surgical but difficult estimate bedside testing. scans, performed staging, provide opportunity quantify lean without additional cost exposure radiation eliminate inconvenience further investigations.
