To study the links of family background, child and adolescent social behaviour, (mal)adaptation with heavy drinking by age 20 frequency drinking, binge Cut-down, Annoyed, Guilt, Eye-opener (CAGE) questionnaire scores problems due to at ages 27 42 years.In Finnish Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study Personality Social Development, data have been collected interviews, inventories questionnaires. Behavioural were gathered 8 14; on alcohol consumption 14, 20, 27, 36 42.A total 184 males 163 females; 94% original sample 8-year-olds.Family adversities, externalizing problem behaviours, low school success, truancy substance use in adolescence associated early middle both genders, CAGE females. The antecedents varied, however, across indicators gender. was least predictable studied antecedents. Childhood up explained 43% males' 31% females' 42; 19%, respectively, 27.The warning signs should be taken seriously preventive work for abuse. Problem is preceded maladjustment school, onset even more significantly than adulthood.
