Cyclosporin for the treatment of severe inflammatory bowel disease

ABSTRACT
SUMMARY A pilot study was performed to assess the role of cyclosporin in management severe inflammatory bowel disease. Twelve patients with Crohn's disease and 12 ulcerative colitis were admitted hospital a attack. They treated an intravenous regimen corticosteroids for 5 days followed by oral therapy. In addition, they received 6‐week course cyclosporin, initially 15 mg kg −1 day reduced 7.5 . comparison historical controls, addition standard corticosteroid therapy appeared have no benefit. Adverse effects common but minor. The expression Class II molecules on inflamed epithelium rapidly reversed which may indicate potential therapeutic benefit over longer periods time.
