Recognition of need in health care consultations: a qualitative study of people with psoriasis

ABSTRACT
Background Psoriasis is a life‐long inflammatory condition that can impact on quality of life, psychological and social functioning. Previous literature suggests patient dissatisfaction with psoriasis management; however, little known about people's specific experiences health care consultations. Objectives The study aimed to explore in depth the perspectives people living including coping responses, self‐care strategies how consultations professionals both primary secondary are experienced. Methods Qualitative semistructured interviews were carried out diverse sample 29 generated purposively recruited from community sources North West England. Interviews coded using Framework Analysis produce thematic framework incorporating key emerging issues concepts. Results Participants experienced as complex involving physical, challenges, well control, but perceived these largely unacknowledged by practitioners Practitioners lacking knowledge expertise management psoriasis, empathy effects failing manage it long‐term condition. This lack support resulted some participants withdrawing conventional service providers seeking alternative help. Conclusions needs be recognized managed emotional addressed alongside appropriate diagnosis regular reviews treatments which may involve referrals specialist care.
