ABSTRACT
Summary An ultrastructural study was performed on the gills of juvenile Argentinian silverside, Odontesthes bonariensis . The are composed two sets four holobranchs and, in turn, each holobranch consists a gill arch and rows caudolaterally projecting branchial filaments. From dorsal ventral surfaces filament, lamellae radiate out as foldings epithelial layer. Gill rakers present arches, anteromedial side opposite to rakers, arches filaments covered by stratified epithelium, whereas essentially consist thin envelope containing capillaries. In mucous cells, rodlet granular pavement cells mitochondria‐rich identified. epithelium that lines comprises cell types, outer inner capillary walls inside defined pillar cells. ultrastructure all these types is described our findings discussed light existing data fish morphology. silverside particular interest characteristics showed such their arrangement clusters 2–3 small depressed surface contact with aquatic milieu, features which strongly resemble those euryhaline species.
