ABSTRACT
Summary The aim of the study was to give an account epidemic abortions in sheep caused by Salmonella enterica ssp. serovar Abortusovis, which occurred Dalmatia, south Croatia, winter 2003–2004. Five flocks with rate abortion ranging from 22% 38% during last‐third gestation were examined. Abortusovis isolated 13 vaginal smears and two fetuses. Direct inoculation found be superior pre‐enrichment enrichment selective broth for isolation. isolates biochemically identified, characterized serotyping polymerase chain reaction based on amplification IS200 sequence specific Abortusovis. A fragment 900 bp detected all isolates. sensitivity testing isolates, carried out disk diffusion method determination minimal inhibitory concentrations, resulted a high almost antimicrobials used. Only moderately sensitive oxytetracycline, whereas one isolate showed resistance streptomycin. Campylobacter fetus Listeria monocytogenes excluded as causative agents culture testing, brucellosis, leptospirosis, Q fever chlamydiosis serological testing.
