ABSTRACT
The purpose of the present study was to investigate etiological factors, symptomatology, management and outcome spontaneous pneumothorax in children aged <15 years.The authors' reviewed records 44 with between January 1990 February 2002.The median age 4.6 years (range 2 months-14 years), 51% were male. Breathlessness coughing most common symptoms. All pneumothoraces initially managed by closed tube drainage. Thirty-seven (84%) responded well cured thoracostomy alone. Seven (16%) underwent thoracotomy. hospital stay 12.9 days. There two deaths from respiratory failure. Six- 96-month follow-up information available for 32 patients, only one recurrence found.Lung infections frequently observed underlying pathology patients studied. Closed alone sufficient majority patients.
