ABSTRACT
The results of the screening 3318 diabetic patients for sight‐threatening retinopathy in three UK centres are reported. aims study were to determine extent screened population and assess relative effectiveness different methods appropriately referring cases from a population, context very close routine clinical service. Patients assessed by ophthalmoscopic examination an ophthalmological assistant. assistants' referral grades formed reference standard against which other including ophthalmoscopy primary screeners who general practitioners (GPs), ophthalmic opticians hospital physicians, assessment consultant ophthalmologists non‐mydriatic Polaroid fundus photography. performance based on ranged sensitivity 0.41, with specificity 0.89, one GP groups, 0.67, 0.96, physician group. camera 0.35, 0.95, 0.98.
