ABSTRACT
S ummary The East Anglian Pleistocene succession records eight temperate stages with forest and also interstadials in two of the intervening cold stages. histories these are described. through tree genera involved considered. assemblages each four substages (pre‐temperate, early‐temperate, late‐temperate, post‐temperate) compared. development heath is examined. Floristic phytogeographic changes indicated by palaeobotanical evidence give information on Tertiary‐relic extinctions, have a bearing problem history stage refugia. success or failure particular response to stress climatic change discussed.
