ABSTRACT
Channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus , pituitary powder (CP) was prepared and administered to determine the effect of preparation, head selection criteria, season collection on biological potency this gonadotropic preparation. Pituitaries were harvested from three catfish processing plants throughout months December, February, March, April investigate CP potency. Gravid female channel injected intraperitoneally (IP) with priming (2 mg/kg) resolving doses (8 treatments, luteinizing hormone‐releasing hormone analog (LHRHa), or saline. Pharmaceutical grade Carbopol 971P resin (CAR) tested as a 1% aqueous dispersion in physiological saline (10 IP single injection at final volume 2 mL per kg slow‐release vehicle. Individual females hand‐stripped, eggs fertilized freshly blue furcatus spermatozoa. processed either acetone ethanol/acetone resulted significantly different ovulation rates 35 73%, respectively ( P ≤ 0.01). Ovulation success not among LHRHa treatment groups. groups collected (74%) December (67%), male (69%), small individuals (55%). The shortest latency period males 39.1 ± 0.7 38.5 0.4 h, respectively. CAR vehicle performed poorly resulting an average rate 19.0%, 3.3% viable embryos 36 h post‐fertilization. potentially represent spawning aid for production hybrid × catfish.
